OUR APPROACH
All our cows and calves are 100% pasture fed.
But what does this actually mean and why is it important to us?

Most cows these days are fed some sort of concentrates (corn, soya, wheat, barley etc) but our approach is to only feed the cows on what nature intended, which is a diverse pasture full of all sorts of different grasses, legumes and herbs. The more variation the better!
We believe this approach is not only better for the environment, the soil and biodiversity, but also for the animals health and our own health too. In fact, 100% pasture fed cows produce beef and dairy with lower total fat levels compared to cows fed concentrates and contain higher levels of omega 3 fatty acids.
During the winter months when grass growth has slowed down or stopped, we feed the cows on hay that was made on the farm during the summer months.
It also makes the best tasting milk in the world.
COW & CALF
The fact we are most proud about at Pentrefelin is the fact we are a cow and calf dairy. This means all our calves stay with their mother, none are taken away.
Boys, girls, small and big, no matter what breed they are they stay with their mother. The calves suckle their mother until the age of about 6-7 months, and even once weaned they aren’t separated, they stay in the “milking mob”.
The heifer calves (girls) will all stay here on the farm to join the milking herd once old enough, and the steers (boys) will stay on the farm until 2.5/3 years of age and then be sold as beef boxes from the farm gate. We’re always happy to answer any questions people have about our farming methods, so if your curious and want to know more don’t be afraid to get in touch.
